Shawn Krueger is an American landscape painter in the Tonalist/Luminist tradition. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Krueger went to study at Oak Hill College in London and Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, graduating from the latter with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998. Upon graduation, he returned frequently to the UK and painted in nearly every corner of Great Britain. In the years since, Krueger has shown his landscape paintings in museums and galleries throughout the Midwest and East Coast United States. Krueger’s paintings have garnered numerous awards over the years and he has pieces in the permanent collection of the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids, Calvin College and the Bissell Corporation.
Most of Krueger’s small-scale pieces begin as plein air studies. “I find it important to start outside, on site. Color and composition may change once I am in the studio, but I need that knowledge of the structural elements within the landscape to inform me as I begin. When I feel good about the initial study, I feel confident about seeing a finished painting that will be pleasing.”
The artist divides his time between Michigan and the mountains of North Carolina.
